In what has been named the largest-ever haul of cannabis, police in Spain have seized over 32 toons of marijuana buds in Toledo, Ciudad Real, Valencia and Asturias, reports dpa.
The 32 tons of buds are equivalent to about 1.1 million plants and the police force have spoken of the “largest cache of packaged marijuana found so far… not only in Spain, but internationally.”
As part of the police operation, twenty people (nine men and 11 women) between the ages of 20 and 59 were arrested, reports dpa. The police said that the criminal operation sent vacuum-packed marijuana throughout Spain as well as to other countries across Europe including Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
The illegal cannabis market is the biggest of its kind in the EU with 22 million users spending around EUR 9 billion (USD 8.94 billion) on cannabis each year, according to data from Interpol.
