Poland has submitted a complaint to the European Court of Justice denouncing the EU’s tobacco product directive (TPD), the Polish Government Information Centre (CIR) reported.
Its focus is the ban on the sale of menthol cigarettes from 2020 in EU member states. The complaint challenges the legality of the directive.
According to the Lewiatan employer confederation, who welcomed the government's action, the directive runs against EU laws and free commodity flow rulings.
The prohibition of menthol cigarettes has long been opposed in Poland due to the country’s large menthol market.
Poland is the largest cigarette manufacturer and second largest tobacco producer in the EU.
