Nearly two thirds of respondents said they favour banning cigarette sales to anyone born after 2000, according to a poll published on the Sydney Morning Herald website.
The poll was taken after a non-binding resolution calling on state leaders to explore the option was approved last week by the Tasmanian Legislative Council, the upper house of the state parliament. The ban would take effect when persons born in 2000 turn 18, the Herald reported.
Sixty-four per cent of approximately 29,000 poll respondents said the idea was “excellent”, contrasted with 26 per cent who replied the idea was wrong.
Tasmanian Health Minister Michelle O'Byrne reportedly said she will ask the state's Commissioner for Children to study the issue. (pi)
