Since 1 September, the price of some cigarettes in France has decreased by 1 per cent, reports Le Figaro.
On 1 September, some tobacco brands lowered the price of their packets in France by a few cents. For example, a Camel Black or Blue costs EUR 0.20 less and Lucky Strike Blue EUR 0.10 less.
Some cigarettes thus fall below the symbolic ten-euro mark, the target initially set by Emmanuel Macron's government in its desire to combat smoking. To achieve this, taxes on tobacco – which account for more than 80 per cent of the price of the pack – have gradually increased since 2017. Last year, the state succeeded in its aim, as many of the best-selling packs reached EUR 10. By comparison, in March 2018, the average price was around EUR 8, the report said.
Lung specialist Professor Bertrand Dautzenberg thinks that the price change is purely symbolic since some brands have seen their prices increase. The new price structure targets brands popular amongst the young, according to ASH.
