California may ban use of smokeless tobacco in baseball parks, ending use of chewing tobacco by ballplayers and vaping in the grandstand. A prominent anti-smoking group says it is working on a nationwide ban.
“Knock Tobacco Out of the Park”, is a nationwide initiative announced by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids that includes a website offering tools to send messages to Major League Baseball and the Players Association calling for removal of all forms of tobacco use from baseball.
California Assemblymember Tony Thurmond introduced a ban on use of all forms of tobacco in ballparks in the state legislature. San Francisco Supervisor Mark Farrell is sponsoring a similar measure for the city, according to news reports.
“The use of smokeless tobacco in baseball, at any level and in any location, sets a terrible example for the millions of young people who watch the game and far too often see their favorite players using snuff, dip or chew,” Thurmond said in a statement by Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. “We have a great opportunity to protect our players and stand up for kids by getting tobacco out of the game.”
