RJRT profit rises 5.4 per cent

RJ Reynolds Tobacco (RJRT) operating profit rose 5.4 per cent in the second quarter as higher prices for its products and lower payments into the Master Settlement Agreement offset a big slump in cigarette volume, said Reynolds American (RAI).

Volume fell 8.3 per cent due in part to one less shipping day than the comparable quarter in 2013, and to a reduction in wholesale inventory levels. The decline was steeper than the 5.5 per cent estimated drop in industry volume, RAI said in a statement.
Camel increased its market share 0.4 percentage points to 10.2 per cent and Pall Mall rose marginally to 9.3 per cent. Grizzly moist snuff, the flagship brand of RAI’s American Snuff subsidiary, gained 0.7 percentage points to 31.4 per cent of the US market. At the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco unit, volume of the super-premium Natural American Spirit rose nearly per cent. Santa Fe operating profit increased 15.1 per cent to USD 84 million (EUR 65.5 million) in the three months ended 30 June.
RJRT contributed USD 698 million of RAI’s USD 836 million quarterly operating income on sales of USD 2.2 billion.
