The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a ban on the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavoured e-liquids that contain nicotine, the San Francisco Examiner reported.
A final vote is scheduled for next week and Mayor Ed Lee has said he will sign the legislation into law, according to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids. The legislation introduced by Supervisor Malia Cohen would take effect next April.
Use of characterizing flavours in most tobacco products is prohibited nationally, however US tobacco regulators made an exception for menthol cigarettes. The San Francisco ban would also apply to flavoured chewing tobacco. A similar measure is under consideration in the neighbouring city of Oakland, California.
