Tobacco farmers have sold 3.7 million kg of their crops and earned USD 8.9 million in the first three days of the 2021 marketing season, reports The Herald.
This result means an over 1,000 per cent increase in sales compared to the same period last year where “only” 374,388 kg were sold and USD 783,465 earned.
This year’s tobacco marketing season started on 7 April and contact floors, where most of the crop is sold, opened a day later.
According to the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB), 3.3 million kg of tobacco worth a total of USD 7.9 million was sold at the contract floors within the first two days and 489,153 kg worth USD 1.05 million was sold at auction over three days, reports The Herald.
