Senators press networks to include smoking depiction warnings

Three democratic senators have jointly reached out to several major media companies, including broadcast, cable, satellite, to endorse smoking depiction warnings on TV and movie ratings, Multichannel News reported.

Senators Ed Markey, Richard Blumenthal and Chris Van Hollen sent letters over a dozen companies, including Apple, Google, Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, the four broadcast networks, AT&T (DirecTV), Viacom, Sony and Lionsgate, according to the report.
In the letter, the trio wrote, “Both film and television continue to expose children and adolescents to tobacco content conclusively provide to cause physical harm to young viewers,” Multichannel News reported.
The senators asked the companies to provide information about their tobacco depiction policies and production rules, if they have a vested interest in including tobacco use, and how the content is rated.
The senators requested that all future content containing tobacco use include TV-MA on TV and R on film ratings, that the production does not include tobacco product placement, that sound anti-smoking PSAs will run before any TV show or film with tobacco use and that the networks stop promotional material with smoking depictions.
