Shops that sell gutka and paan will be closed

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said all shops that continue to sell banned tobacco products such as gutka and paan will be closed, reports The Indian Express.

In a bid to make Tamil Nadu a tobacco-free state, the Health Minister met with food safety department officers, senior police officers and officials from local bodies and told them to take strict action against tobacco sellers. He said that if the shops were caught selling banned products they would first be served a notice, followed by fines if they continued to sell the products in question. If this does not deter them, their shops will be sealed, reports The Indian Express.
The minister expects that gutka and paan will disappear from Tamil Nadu within a month and has said district food safety officers who are able to make their district a tobacco-free zone will be awarded a prize by Chief Minister MK Stalin.
“They will receive an appreciation letter and a prize from the CM and it will be discussed with the CM,” Subramanian said.
