Shops to pay annual tobacco licence

A new bill aiming to curtail the sale of tobacco and e-cigarette products will be brought to the cabinet, reports the Irish Examiner.

Shops in Ireland are facing a new licencing system with an annual fee for selling tobacco and e-cigarette products, according to the Irish Examiner.
Existing rules state that a shop selling any type of tobacco product must pay a one-off fee of about the value of four of five packets of cigarettes.
Health Minister Simon Harris will now bring a new bill in front of the cabinet which suggests a new licencing system forcing shops to pay an annual fee to the State. The bill also includes plans to ban the sale of e-cigarettes to under-18s, prohibit the sale of tobacco products from vending machines and enforce fixed penalties for shops that do not adhere to the rules.
Taoiseach Leo Varadker commented on plans to restrict the sale of e-cigarettes to minors when speaking to the Dáil earlier in the month: “Certainly, the Government will give consideration to restricting the sale of vaping equipment to minors, prohibiting and restricting advertising.”
