Officials from India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare are considering reclassifying smokeless tobacco as a food item to obtain better product knowledge and content disclosure, the Times of India reports.
Health officials will meet with counterparts at the Food Safety and Standards Authority on April 5-6 to discuss possible reclassification, the newspaper reports. Registration as food item under the Food Safety and Standards Act, which is enforced by the standards authority, will allow testing of smokeless tobacco products and require their contents be revealed.
