In a budget speech, the finance advisor Mirza Azizul Islam, proposed the surcharge in the interest of public health. He also proposed to impose an additional 20 per cent tax on the paper that is used in producing packaging materials of cigarettes.
Islam further proposed to charge a value added tax to scented tobacco (jarda) and burnt tobacco (gul) products irrespective of their turnover. (pi)
