Smoking cigarettes and vaping has been banned in some public areas in Perth with big fines issued to those caught breaking the new rules, reports Daily Mail Australia.

Vaping has become increasingly popular with youths in Australia with numbers for e-cigarette users aged 16 to 24 doubling in 12 months. As a reaction, councillors in Perth have now approved five smoke-free areas in parts of North Perth, Mount Hawthorn and Leederville, reports Daily Mail Australia.
The ban, that is now in force, will see anyone smoking or vaping in the areas fined AUD 200 (USD 132) although no fines will be issued for the first six months of the ban.
“It is our hope that we can encourage people to stop smoking, reduce relapse for those who are trying to quit and prevent young people from picking up the habit, including vaping,” said City of Vincent Council mayor Emma Cole.
By implementing the ban, Perth is following in Melbourne’s footsteps where a smoking and vaping ban is already in place across 13 outdoor areas.
