Smoking ban in cars takes effect

As of 1 April, smoking in cars with children present has become illegal in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia and the Australian state of Tasmania.

Anyone caught smoking in a vehicle with someone under 19 – even if the window or door is open – could be hit with a fine of nearly CAD 400 (USD 390) in Nova Scotia.
The province is the first in Canada to introduce a ban on smoking in cars with children on board, but several other provinces, including British Columbia, Ontario and Prince Edward Island, are pledging to penalise people for smoking in their cars with children.
A similar law has also been introduced on the Australian island of Tasmania where a ban on smoking in cars with passengers under 18 has been in place since 1 January.
Following a three-month amnesty period for enforcing the new law, as of 1 April tobacco control officers and Tasmania police officers will begin issuing formal warnings and infringement notices to people breaking the law.
Smokers' rights groups have criticised the laws, saying that this is merely the first step to outlaw smoking around children in private homes. (pi)
