Smoking ban to still go ahead

The Tokyo ban on smoking in bars and restaurants will still go ahead from April 1, despite the Tokyo Olympics being postponed until 2021, reported Channel News Asia.

The ban was originally brought in as part of the city’s preparations for the 2020 Olympics and will mean that smokers of traditional cigarettes will no longer be allowed to smoke in bars or restaurants. Despite the Tokyo Olympics now being postponed until 2021, due to the outbreak of the corona virus, the new regulations will still come into force from 1 April. As well as regular cigarettes, the ban also applies to e-cigarettes that use liquid nicotine, although ‘heat not burn’ devices are not included.
According to the report, some bar owners have built designated smoking areas to get around the ban. Akihiro Funyuu, manager of one of Tokyo’s many bars, told Channel News Asia that, "For customers who don't smoke, we have listened to their voices. But here, we've created a smoking room to listen to the smokers' voices too."
The WHO has stated that smokers are more susceptible to the virus, but, for many, that still does not create enough incentive to stop. Ryo Okumara told CNA reporters, “If I get the virus, I get the virus. I can’t stop. It’s an indulgence.”
