The Nairobi City Council has banned smoking in all public places, including offices, hotels, bars, public parks and on the streets.

Smokers ignoring the ban will risk arrest, a jail sentence of up to six months or fines totalling Sh 2,000 (USD 30). Smoking places are not yet named, but Nairobi's mayor, Dick Wathika, said the council would designate special public smoking points and urged proprietors of bars and restaurants to partition them into smoking and none smoking zones.
This is not the first attempt to regulate the tobacco industry. In 2006, the High Court rejected a controversial ban on smoking in public places across Kenya by the ministry of health.
