The French government issued a decree that bans smoking in "all enclosed and roofed places, which are open to the public or which are places of work".
The ban will come into force on 1 February 2007. Bars which sell cigarettes as well as hotels, restaurants and discotheques, will have to enforce the ban on 1 January 2008. Establishments that wish to permit smoking will have to provide smoking rooms which can be closed and to which serving staff will not be permitted access. (pi)
