SPAIN/BELGIUM
Spain and Belgium implement workplace smoking bans

Spain and Belgium introduced bans on smoking in offices and other places of work, emulating countries such as Ireland and Sweden, as European governments try to reduce the cost of treating tobacco-related diseases.

Under Spain's new law, people who smoke in prohibited zones can be fined as much as Euro 30 (US$ 36) for the first offence. A second offence can cost Euro 600 and a third as much as Euro 10,000. Businesses that don't enforce the law can also be fined as much as Euro 10,000.
Belgium will implement measures next January that will allow smoking in restaurants only in separate rooms that are completely closed off from the rest of the building. Bars and cafés will be exempt from the ban, though they must have adequate ventilation and a non-smoking zone. (pi)
