A bill to tax cigarettes made from RYO machines in retail outlets was approved by the lower house of the Washington state legislature on 6 March.

The bill, which will go to the upper house, calls for tax stamps to be affixed to boxes of cigarette tubes or papers. The state tax currently is USD 3.03 (EUR 2.30)for a pack of 20.
“In order to enforce collection of the tax in the case of roll-your-own cigarettes, a retailer must affix a stamp or stamps to each box or similar container provided by the retailer to the consumer,” states House Bill 2565, as posted on the state legislature website. “A retailer must provide cigarette tubes to a consumer in one or more twenty unit denominations. Stamps must be for an amount equaling the tax due under this chapter. Each cigarette tube or paper provided to the consumer is deemed a cigarette for purposes of imposing and collecting taxes under this chapter.” (pi)
