Stevia sweeteners for food use approved

Natural sweeteners derived from the stevia plant, which is considered an alternative crop for tobacco growers, could be authorised for EU-wide use by the end of the year, reports Reuters.

At its meeting on 4 July, the EU’s Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health approved the use of steviol glycosides as a sweetener for foods and beverages in the European market.
Next, the European Parliament will conduct its review of the regulation. "The text will now be subject to the scrutiny of the European Parliament. At the end of the procedure, steviol glucoside could be authorised in the EU by the end of the year," the European Commission said in a statement.
Concern over rising levels of obesity and diabetes has spurred the development of new sweeteners. Unlike sucrose, steviol glycosides do not induce a glycaemic response when consumed, increasing their appeal as a natural sweetener for diabetics and those on carbohydrate-controlled diets.
As part of the CAP reformof the tobacco sector, the EU aims to phase out the subsidy payment for tobacco cultivation and explore the possibilities to replace partially the tobacco production by the production of Stevia rebaudiana.
Food consultancy Zenith International expects the global market for stevia-derived products to reach USD 825 million by 2014. (pi)
