Russia is all set for tough new smoking regulations according to Deputy Health Minister Sergei Velmyaikin, who expects to bring legislation to the Duma by 1 November, 2012, becoming effective May 2013.
The draft law proposes a ban on smoking in public places, common premises in residential buildings, markets, restaurants and on long-distance trains. Street stalls smaller than 50 square metres will also be prohibited from selling cigarettes and tobacco products. The draft law includes a ban on cigarette advertising and intends to have warning pictorials placed on the packs. The Health Ministry states that these restrictions will be imposed gradually. (pi)
