Stricter laws on ads and packs

Israel has issued new rules governing the marketing and advertising of tobacco products, according to a statement released on the Knesset website.

Almost all advertising of tobacco, except print media, will be banned, according to the new legislation on tobacco advertising. The ban extends to cigarettes, cigars, hookah products and papers as well as e-cigarettes and all affiliated devices, according to the statement on the Knesset website.
The law will also require cigarette packs to be a brown colour. The colour shade “Pantone 448C” was found to be the world’s ugliest colour by a study. The cigarette packs will also feature health warnings against smoking that take up between 30 and 60 per cent of the package, the report says. Packaging for e-cigarettes and related products will say “Warning – this product is very addictive and harmful to your health.” While packaging for other smoking products will say “Warning – smoking causes serious diseases and premature death.” All packs of smoking products will be sold together with an anti-smoking brochure published by the health ministry.
“This is a historic day and an important victory in the war we are waging against the phenomenon of smoking in Israel. This bill was authored out of a sense of duty to protect the bodies and souls of our children, who are tempted and become addicted to smoking products and then, when they are adults, pay a heavy price, [both financially and in terms of health]. We are fighting for the lives of the teenagers,” Eyal Ben Reuven, Member of the Knesset, was quoted as saying.
