Spain's lawmakers yesterday voted to introduce one of the toughest smoking bans in Western Europe as of next year.
The new legislation will tighten the existing lax anti-tobacco laws by banning smoking in bars, cafes, restaurants and any other enclosed public space. It will also make people stop smoking in open areas near hospitals and schools, and any area near a children’s playground. Smoking will also be banned on TV.
The current anti-smoking laws, which were introduced in 2006, ban smoking at the workplace but allow for many exceptions. For example, establishments smaller than 100 square meters are able to choose whether they want to be smoking or non-smoking venues and most allow smoking. Smoke-filled bars are still common place in Spain. (pi)
