Tax hikes spur quit attempts

The Ministry of Health said tax hikes on tobacco have led to more smokers seeking medical help to quit smoking, the Saudi Gazette reported.

"Our clinics witnessed a large increase in patients who came in wanting to quit smoking so they won't have to pay the taxes on tobacco,” said Sulaiman Al-Sabi of the Naqaa Anti-Smoking Society. Tobacco taxes have been increased by 348 per cent in the kingdom, leading to more patients wanting to quit smoking or to reduce their tobacco consumption, Al-Sabi told the Makkah newspaper.
The price of cigarettes has reached SAR 25 (EUR 5.75), meaning smokers are spending some SAR 750 (EUR 172) on cigarettes per month.
Tobacco imports have also decreased in comparison to the previous year, with the Customs Control reporting a 70 per cent reduction. “The reason for the decrease could be that less people are buying tobacco due to the price increase or it could be that tobacco vendors are importing large stocks and store them until they need to restock," Al-Sabi said.
