US Surgeon General Jerome Adams has called for aggressive steps to be taken to combat an "epidemic" of e-cigarette use among teens.
The rare advisory note read: “I, Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, VADM Jerome Adams, am emphasising the importance of protecting our children from a lifetime of nicotine addiction and associated health risks by immediately addressing the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use. The recent surge in e-cigarette use among youth, which has been fuelled by new types of e-cigarettes that have recently entered the market, is a cause for great concern. We must take action now to protect the health of our nation’s young people.”
Detailed information for parents, teachers, health professionals and states, communities, tribes and territories, was also given, including facts on e-cigarette use among middle and high school students, and information on the devices and products available.
The advisory singled out the vaping product Juul, made by Juul Labs, as being increasingly popular among teens, small in size, and easy to conceal.
