The Tobacco Research Board warned farmers about the rapid spread of a highly destructive pest primarily found on tomato plants but one that also consumes related crops including tobacco, The Herald said.
Tuta absoluta was introduced in Zimbabwe from South America. The pest closely resembles ordinary leaf-eating larvae found in the tobacco agrosystem and can quickly adopt to a variety of insecticides, the newspaper reported. The danger to other crops arises when tomato plants are not present.
