Tobacco production this year may exceed the official target by 10 per cent, or about 28 million kilograms, because of illegal cultivation in Karnataka, reports the news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).
Production in the growing season that ends in August will reach 300 million kilograms instead of the target of 272 million kilograms, PTI said in a story citing an unnamed official of the Tobacco Board of India. Production at 300 million kilograms would be less than the previous harvest of 323 million kilograms, according to PTI. Karnataka, located in south-west India, is a leading tobacco producing state.
