Tobacco imports up in Bhutan

The country imported BTN 565.63 million (USD 7.1 million) worth of tobacco and tobacco products in the first six months of the year, including 96.85 million sticks of cigarettes, reports Kuensel.

The ban on tobacco sales was lifted in July 2021, as smuggling of tobacco products surged in the wake of the pandemic.
According to statistics published by the Department of Revenue and Customs, Bhutan imported BTN 144.23 million worth of tobacco and tobacco products in 2020 after the country’s borders were closed on 23 March due to the pandemic. Shortly after the ban was lifted, the value of tobacco imports rose to BTN 453.43 million.
A look at the import figures for 2020 and 2021 shows that tobacco smuggling was rampant. Imports of tobacco and tobacco products increased by 200 per cent after the ban was lifted, the report said.
Assuming the same amount of tobacco products are imported in the second half of the year, the total value of tobacco imports for the year would be BTN 1.13 billion.
Before the ban, a person could only import 800 sticks of cigarettes or 1,200 bidis or 150 cigars or 750 grams of other tobacco/tobacco products.
