Tobacco production in Mozambique was up by 23 per cent to EUR 65 million in 2023, compared to the previous year, reports Club of Mozambique referring to data acquired by Lusa.
During the 2022/23 tobacco growing season, Mozambique had a cultivation area of 76,850 hectares, and produced 65,856 tons of tobacco, which was 15 per cent lower than the year before.
Mozambique has the eighth largest tobacco growing area in the world, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report released in 2023, reports Club of Mozambique. The country is also the third largest producer of tobacco in Africa with 91,469 hectares available beaten only by Zimbabwe (112,770 hectares) and Malawi (100,962 hectares).
Along with Brazil, Mozambique is the only nation from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) referenced in the WHO report, according to Club Mozambique.
