Advertising tobacco products is an offense subject to a fine of as much as AED 1 million (EUR 201,000) from today as a package of stiff new controls took effect, The National reported.
The curbs are supposed to protect youth from exposure to tobacco products, stop people from smoking and prevent second-hand smoke, said the newspaper based in Abu Dhabi. They are in force across the United Arab Emirates.
Vending machines sales and promotion of tobacco products are banned, as are sales to persons below the age of 18 and smoking in a vehicle when a child under the age of 12 is present. Fines for violating the underage smoking rule range from AED 500 to 10,000, the newspaper said on its website. Smoking in places of worship, schools and universities is prohibited as is the sale of sweets that resemble tobacco products, the newspaper said.
