SOUTH KOREA
Tobacco products omnipresent in entertainment media

More than half of South Korean entertainment media contains smoking scenes or shows tobacco products, The Korea Times reported.

53.3 per cent of dramas, 50.4 per cent of films and 50 per cent of webtoons depicted smoking, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The ministry conducted the study to see how many children and young people were exposed to smoking scenes and tobacco imagery through media.
The ministry also reviewed YouTube clips, which dealt repeatedly with tobacco products. Some of the footage even told minors how they could illegally buy tobacco at stores, the report said.
"Children and adolescents exposed to smoking scenes repeatedly are more likely to try smoking," a ministry official was quoted as saying. "We urge entertainment content creators and producers to refrain from showing smoking in content rated for minors."
