Smoking may be banned in and around all event venues at the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, The Japan News reported.
The Tokyo Organising Committee for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games is planning to ban smoking at all venues in Tokyo, including all indoor and outdoor areas of each site. This would be the first time that such a measure will be implemented at the Summer Olympics, according to the report.
The Committee's proposal to ban smoking at all Olympic venues complies with the wish of the International Olympic Committee to promote smoke-free games. It states that there are no plans to create smoking zones, as there were in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and London 2012, the report said.
At the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018, a total smoking ban was already imposed at the venues, but cigarette butts landed scattered around the entrance. The Tokyo Committee will therefore discuss measures with local governments, including the Tokyo metropolitan government, according to the report.
