The Health Ministry asked the Ministry of Finance to extend the 28 per cent ‘sin tax’ on tobacco products to the bidi industry, The Economic Times said.

Critics claim bidi makers have closed large factories and opened up multiple smaller facilities to take advantage of an exemption for small manufacturers, the newspaper said on its website. The Health Ministry also recommended doing away with the tiered tax structure for cigarettes, the Times said.
