The Commerce and Industry Ministry is preparing a proposal to completely ban foreign direct investment (FDI) in the tobacco sector, the Press Trust of India reported.
Although FDI is prohibited in manufacturing cigars, cigarettes, tobacco and tobacco substitutes, investment is allowed in technology collaborations, including franchise licensing, trademarks, brand names and management contracts, the news agency said. Tobacco shares plunged on the news.
