Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plans to make good on his election promise to introduce plain packaging for tobacco products, stating in a letter to Health Minister Jane Philpott that it will be a health care priority.
Philpott was instructed to introduce plain packaging requirements for tobacco products similar to those in Australia and the United Kingdom. Canada currently requires health care warnings cover 75 per cent of the front and back of cigarette packs, compared to an average 82.5 per cent (front/back) in Australia, the first country to implement plain packaging.
