Tobacco curing consumes more than 20 per cent of the country’s annual wood production, according to a study cited by the newspaper Dawn.
The country's roughly 35,000 curing barns consume 2.5 million tons out of a yearly wood production of 12 million tons, Dawn said, citing data in a report by the Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD). An average barn will consume 1,000 kilograms of wood over eight to 10 days of curing.
Pakistan’s forest cover at 4.5 per cent is well below a recommended target of 15 per cent, the newspaper reported.
