A new study led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that most adults in the US would be behind banning the sale of all tobacco products, reports CNN.
The study showed that over half of the adults questioned supported a ban on all tobacco products and almost two-thirds said they were in favour of a ban on menthol cigarettes. The poll included 6,455 adults that were surveyed in 2021 before the proposed menthol ban by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which is still being considered, reports CNN.
“Our findings are generally consistent with previous research showing support for menthol cigarette sales prohibitions, including among population groups historically targeted by unjust marketing practices and with a high prevalence of menthol cigarette use (eg, non-Hispanic Black adults),” it says in the study.
The study also found that support to ban tobacco sales was lower among current tobacco users. Over a quarter said they were in favour of banning all tobacco sales and more than a third said they supported banning menthol cigarettes, according to CNN.
Experts say menthol makes it easier to get started on cigarettes and harder to quit, fearing that especially young people could get hooked on smoking by starting to smoke menthol cigarettes.
“The proposed rules would help prevent children from becoming the next generation of smokers and help adult smokers quit,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement when the proposal was announced. “Additionally, the proposed rules represent an important step to advance health equity by significantly reducing tobacco-related health disparities.”
