Health Minister Stephen Donnelly signed a new law to ban the sale of vapes to anyone under the age of 18, reports BBC News.

The order makes it an offence to sell a nicotine inhaling product, such as e-cigarettes, to a child and anyone found to be in breach of if it can be fined up to EUR 4,000 and face up to six months in prison.
Mr Donnelly said he was “pleased” that the ban had been implemented into law before Christmas and thanked colleagues in the Oireachtas (Irish houses of parliament) who “understood the urgency for our children” and who, he said, supported him to get the law enacted quickly, reports BBC News.
This comes as the Minister for Finance Michael McGrath held off on introducing a new tax on vaping amid fears it could alienate smokers using e-cigarettes to quit smoking.
According to breakingnews.ie, in a pre-budget submission, officials from the Department of Finance said a delicate balance needed to be struck to both discourage young people from vaping while also supporting existing smokers who were looking to give up.
The Department of Health recommended that e-cigarettes be taxed differently to traditional products based on their “comparative health harms versus tobacco products” and added that any new tax on e-cigarettes should be ring-fenced for use in tobacco control and to help further reduce rates of smoking in Ireland, reports breakingnews.ie.
