Vaping illness is not likely to occur beyond US

Experts in toxicology and addiction say that the more 1,000 cases of lung injuries and 29 deaths linked to vaping in the US are likely to be rare in Britain and other countries where the suspect products are not widely used, Reuters reported.

Specialists claim that this is “a US-specific phenomenon,” and that there is no sign of a similar pattern of illiness occuring elsewhere, according to the report.
“What’s happening in the US is not happening here (in Britain), nor is it happening in any other countries where vaping is common,” said John Britton, a professor and respiratory medicine consultant and director of the UK Centre for Tobacco & Alcohol Studies at Nottingham University. “It’s a localised problem.”
US investigators and health officials have announced that there may be more than one cause for the cases of vaping lung illness, the report said. US health officials have warned consumers from using vaping oils containing THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, amid ongoing investigation into lung illnesses.
Ann McNeill, a professor of tobacco addiction at the Institute of Psychiatry Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London, said that the type of oils containing THC are banned in Britain and added that Britain has stricter rules on e-cigarette advertising in comparison to the US, according to the report.
She and Britton also mentioned that rates of tobacco cigarette smoking are falling more rapidly in Britain than in the US. “It would be a great shame if people were deterred from using e-cigarettes because of what’s happening in the US,” McNeill was quoted as saying.
