Wallet packs outlawed

Global tobacco company British American Tobacco has been ordered to stop supplying novelty wallet packs of cigarettes after the nation's consumer watchdog told the federal court the packs breached the Trade Practices Act.

BAT was also forced to tell retailers by next Wednesday that all Dunhill cigarette wallet packs are to be removed from sale. The Australian competition and consumer commission (ACCC) issued proceedings against BAT on Tuesday, saying the wallet packs breached tobacco labelling requirements.
The ACCC is also seeking permanent injunctions restraining BAT from supplying the wallet packs, an order for public disclosure and costs. The packs of twenty, released earlier this year, could be split in two smaller packets — one containing seven cigarettes and the other thirteen. When split, the pack of thirteen cigarettes did not carry the grisly images and health warnings required by law.
The mandatory graphic images of smoking-related diseases carrying health warnings were introduced to cigarette packaging in March this year. (pi)
