After a long debate in its management team, Walmart Inc. has announced it will be stopping cigarette sales in some of its US stores, reports Reuters.
According to people familiar with the matter, the stores affected include those in California, Florida, Arkansas and New Mexico. Walmart has introduced a design that features more self-checkout registers with grab-and-go food or candy at the front of the stores in place of tobacco products, reports Reuters.
In 2014, CVS was the first US drugstore to stop selling cigarettes with Walmart halting the sale of e-cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery products a few years later. Since then, pressure from democratic US senators has grown urging Walmart and other retailers to stop selling tobacco products altogether.
