The World Health Organisation released its first-ever report on the environmental impact of the tobacco industry to commemorate the WHO-sponsored World No Tobacco Day.
This year’s theme for the annual event is the threat to the development of nations posed by the tobacco trade. Tobacco related diseases kill more than 7 million people each year and cause USD 1.4 trillion (EUR 1.25 trillion) in healthcare outlays and lost productivity, WHO said. "Tobacco exacerbates poverty, reduces economic productivity, contributes to poor household food choices, and pollutes indoor air," said WHO Director-General Margaret Chan.
