The World Health Organization will publish three reports on novel tobacco products to help bridge the gap between science and policy, according to a company press release.
These reports will inform countries on the current state of scientific knowledge and regulatory and policy options available on novel tobacco products such as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS) and heated tobacco products (HTPs). The publication of these will coincide with World No Tobacco Day 2020, May 31.
The aim of the reports combined with World No Tobacco Day is to reiterate the call for action to regulate novel tobacco products. In the WHO European Region, several countries are already seeing a spike in prevalence of these products among 13-15 year old children.
According to the report, children and young adults have been a key target for novel product advertising and marketing, but the products themselves are still damaging and addictive, even when they do not contain nicotine. The reports will provide countries with background information and key resources to help countries inform their policies on these products. The reports will be “Heated tobacco products: a brief”, “Electronic nicotine and non-nicotine delivery systems: a brief” and “Country case studies on electronic nicotine and non-nicotine delivery systems regulation, 2019. Brazil, Canada, the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom.”
