A bill on a 30 per cent rise of excise tax rates for tobacco products has been approved by the Lithuanian government, Belta news agency informs.
According to estimates made by the ministry of finance, this is going to bring about a 15 per cent increase in cigarette prices. To comply with EU requirements, Lithuania will have to raise excise taxes gradually until 2010. In addition, as from 1 January 2007, stricter anti-tobacco regulations are also coming into force, smoking to prohibited in all catering establishments and other public places. The sole exception will be made for tobacco clubs. (vt)
