Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has now banned smoking inside the terminal, Forbes reported.
An Atlanta City ordinance, enacted in July 2019, banned smoking and vaping in a variety of public places including the city's airport. The ban officially came into effect on 2 January, the report said.
With the passing of the ban, Hartsfield-Jackson becomes the largest airport in the US, officially eliminating smoking and facilities for smokers. Many other airports in the US already ban smoking, but so far Atlanta had not implemented the ban.
According to Forbes, Hartsfield-Jackson is the largest airport in the country in terms of passenger volume. In 2018, the airport saw over 55 million passengers.
Now, that the general smoking ban in Atlanta has come into effect, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that only Las Vegas McCarran, Washington D.C. Dulles and Nashville airports have indoor smoking zones, the report said.
Smoking has been banned in US airports for several years, but to get around this restriction, many private lounges have been built for smokers. Hartsfield-Jackson had seven lounges, Forbes reported.
