Altria Group Inc. has requested a federal judge order Juul Labs Inc to turn over the details of its settlement with 10,000 plaintiffs, reports Reuters.
With a 35 per cent share, Altria is Juul’s largest stakeholder but has not been informed about the settlement that was reached with around 10,000 plaintiffs looking to hold Juul responsible for a youth vaping epidemic. The settlement is said to be worth USD 1.7 billion yet details have remained secret even from others involved in the litigation.
Altria is not part of the settlement but is a defendant in mass tort litigation consolidated before U.S. District Judge William Orrick where individuals and local government entities are accusing the company of taking part in shaping Juul’s strategy to market e-cigarettes to minors, reports Reuters.
Altria has requested to see details of the settlement and the negotiations that proceeded it to be able to evaluate its own possible remaining liability and look into possible claims against third parties. According to Altria, Juul’s refusal to share the details with them “goes far beyond the protections needed to address those concerns, lack any legal basis, and would severely prejudice”.
