British American Tobacco Japan (BAT) has filed for approval from the Japanese Finance Ministry to increase its tobacco product prices in correspondence with the scheduled tax hike in Japan on October 1, according to various sources, The Japan Times reported.
If the Japanese Finance Ministry approves of the request, BAT will raise its product prices by JPY 30-JPY 40 (EUR 0.24-0.32) per pack of 20 cigarettes, according to the report. The tax on cigarettes is expected to increase by one JPY per cigarette from 1 October.
BAT is also planning to increase the price of its heat-not-burn tobacco product glo at some point, The Japan Times reported.
The sources also said that Philip Morris Japan is planning to file a price increase of JPY 40 per pack of 19 or 20 cigarettes, which is less than the company’s initial price increase plan of JPY 50 (EUR 0.39) per pack. In addition to that, the price of the company’s IQOS, which is a heat-not-burn tobacco product, is set to increase by JPY 40 per pack (EUR 0.32) after approval by the Finance Ministry, the report stated.
Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) has already filed for approval from the Finance Minister to increase its prices on most of its tobacco products, according to the report.
