The tax rate for cigarette wholesalers on the taxable price of their product was raised to 11 per cent, more than double the previous 5 per cent, Xinhua news agency said.
Wholesalers also must pay an additional CNY 0.005 (EUR 0.00073) duty per cigarette sold, Xinhua said, citing a joint statement by the Ministry of Finance and State Administration of Taxation. The announcement was made a few days prior to implementation from 10 May, the news agency said.
China also is considering legislation to ban tobacco advertising, sponsorship and promotion of tobacco products.
