A smoking ban goes into effect in public departments in Dubai as of 31 May, Gulf News reported.
The ban follows a decision by the Dubai Executive Council and also states that all cafes, restaurants and shopping malls will be required to have designated smoking areas with proper ventilation or smoke absorbers by 15 September. Individuals under 21 will not be allowed to enter smoking zones.
All food establishments, including bakeries, and other businesses such as beauty salons, hotels and cinemas will also have to adhere to the smoking regulation by 15 November.
Starting in 2008, violators will be fined according to a local order of 2003 pertaining to public health and environment. A blanket ban on smoking will also be introduced in schools, educational institutions, health clubs, internet cafes, food courts and offices.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, acting director-general of Dubai Municipality, said the move follows a decision by the Dubai Executive Council to issue a law regulating smoking in public places after it reviewed a proposal of the Dubai Municipality on the subject. He said the decision is in line with the "Dubai Strategic Plan 2007-2015” to protect public health and improve the quality of life for UAE nationals and expatriates living in Dubai.
